Franklin Center

PROJECT

Franklin Center delivers innovative, tailored services for those on the autism spectrum or with related neurodiversities. They take a unique holistic approach by offering a variety of services from kindergarten through adulthood. SRa was honored to be a part of this special repositioning project to turn a building that was originally the Betty Crocker Test Kitchen into a school and therapy center. Transforming the former test kitchen was an exciting opportunity to create a nurturing and innovative learning environment to make a lasting difference in the lives of students and their families. Franklin Center includes the Academy for K-12 students, fully-licensed comprehensive therapy for the neurodiverse, enrichment for engaging experiences outside of school, summer camp programs, and Capstone which is a post-secondary program for life, social, and vocational skills.

PROCESS

The original two buildings were kept and remodeled to be utilized for classrooms, labs, administration, and workshop spaces. The original small annex between the buildings was removed and replaced with a beautiful heavy timber connection spin utilized for social gatherings. Key design highlights include a strategic drop-off leading to a secure and welcoming entrance lobby. The new connection spine between the two buildings creates a vista to the beautiful woods outside the building. A pre-cast building was also added to house a gymnasium of which the panels feature an organic pattern that is created by an overlay. These design elements all culminate into a center that focuses entirely on the facilitation of the well-being and success of students by creating a unique, inviting, and engaging atmosphere.

RESULT

With the combination of the purposeful design choices made for this project and the incredible work that Franklin Center does, the individuals who attend benefit directly as they are able to be given the tools to develop important life skills as they grow. The truly inspiring dedication that Franklin Center has to the success of their students is evident by the outstanding effort that is put in to their work. It was an immense pleasure for SRa to be a part of this wonderful process.
