This 36,000 sf ambulatory surgery center for Bismarck Surgical Associates in the capital of North Dakota houses 5 operating rooms and administrative space. It also includes an 8,000 sf basement for mechanical equipment which allows for maintenance to easily occur during the long, windy winter. The entrance lobby features a central fireplace accented by stone and wood materials of the interior elements such as the welcome desk and columns. The narrow, linear lights help to set a mood that promotes comfort and ease for patients. The access to natural light in the lobby further helps to procure a relaxed state-of-mind for them by creating an interior environment that does not feel enclosed or isolating. 

The experience of staff in this ASC was also a huge focus of the design. Through programmatic design considerations, a fit plan that allows for the smooth and organized flow of personnel, materials, and other logistical elements was developed. Streamlining the surgical process, from the pre-op to post-op phases for staff was instrumental in the success of this project, improving employee morale and comfort. 

To meet the ownership request of a “modern, yet grounded” building, SRa combined local Habron Brick and metal panel with a canopy that welcomes you inside. This blended aesthetic is continued to the warm interior featuring artist designed large-scale wallcovering, local stone, and reclaimed hickory. This attention to detail helps patients feel calm and at ease in an environment that generally makes many nervous and uncomfortable. Creating a feeling of “home away from home” was a key design objective with this project which in the end drastically improves the average patient and staff experience.  

This ambulatory surgery center for Bismarck Surgical Associates is the physical embodiment of the care and attention which they provide for their patients. Focusing on both the patient and staff experience throughout the entirety of the surgical process through the design choices that were made has helped to improve both the physical and mental well-being of those who find themselves here. From the time patients and staff enter to the time they leave, every aspect of this experience has been considered and designed for. With this surgical facility, BSA is able to further build upon their legacy of conscientious and quality service to the community of Bismarck, ND.
