PROJECT
Riley Crossing is an award-winning senior housing development located in Chanhassen, Minnesota. Riley Crossing occupies eight acres in the northeast quadrant of highways 212 and 101, and is anchored by a 136-unit senior housing structure whose primary focus is to provide independent living, assisted living and memory care apartments to senior citizens together with a full continuum of care. It offers a fitness center, golf green, rooftop patio, hair salon, spa room, underground parking and much, much more. In addition, there is a 92-child daycare facility built into the ground level of the facility that includes a total of six classrooms and 1 infant room, together with indoor and outdoor activity and play spaces, and dedicated area for Ebenezer’s award-winning Intergenerational Program.
This innovative program provides day care for young children and includes interaction with participants in an adult day program for seniors. Something magical happens every day at the Ebenezer Intergenerational Day Program when the young and the old spend time together. As they help each other and learn from one another, an unmistakable bond forms that rises above difference in age and ability. Building on Ebenezer’s faith‐based heritage, the intergenerational program helps bridge the generation gap. Children learn respect for older adults and compassion for their physical limitations. Older adults maintain self‐worth by sharing their lives and experiences. Children bring life, spirit and joy to seniors on the campus, keeping them young at heart. The attention and encouragement of seniors helps children flourish.
Ebenezer Ridges Intergenerational Program received national recognition two years in a row. The 2009 Generations United Shared Site Award and the 2010 Generations United/MetLife Foundation Intergenerational Shared Site Excellence Award recognize excellence in bringing generations together.
The site is set to contain eight (8) twin homes, adding sixteen more independent living units to the development. These single story twin homes will be located on the north end of the site and closest to the site entrance and West 86th Street. In total, there are 152 planned residential units on site.
RESULT
Riley Crossing takes a unique approach to senior living that enhances the living experience tremendously. The Intergenerational Program that Ebenezer employs contributes to the well-being of both seniors and children alike. Children are able to gain wisdom from residents, develop refined social skills at a quick pace, and aid in combating ageism by forming close relationships with the elderly, helping to challenge common stereotypes and misconceptions about aging. Seniors, through engagement with children, have an increased ability to keep cognitive functions sharp through social stimulation, participate in activities that keep them physically active, and maintain their emotional well-being by reducing feelings of social isolation.
All of this is made possible due to the focus on providing for the needs of both senior residents and children in one facility, which was put at the forefront of the design process from day one. Riley Crossing creates a one-of-a-kind community dynamic, which is the foundation to the superb senior living and child daycare experience that is provided here.
